Out of the DarkOut of the Dark by David Weber

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Took about 100 pages to get past the "military" background.

I found that when the book covered the struggles on the ground it was most interesting. There was a section that took place in Romania, near the area of Wallachia, the home region of the historic Prince of Wallachia, aka Vlad The Impaler, aka Dracula. I have friends who have had supper in the Castle of the Prince of Wallachia, so I perked up at this.

You can speed up the reading of this book if you just skip all the descriptions of weaponry… hey, guns are guns.

The very last section of the book takes an interesting turn, which is all I’ll say about it here.

All in all the book was "ok". I found the military fixation tiresome, and the "Humans are so clever" theme annoying as well, but the overall action was attention getting and well done.

Ancestor: A NovelAncestor: A Novel by Scott Sigler

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Great book. Now I’m looking for other books by Scott Sigler!

Starts in the Artic, eventually moves to an island in Lake Superior.

Has genetic researchers trying to create animals to carry human compatible organs for needful people. This of course to horrible consequences as you might imagine.

It is about competition to be the first to produce, about viral contamination, and about international efforts to stop the spread of infections.

Good book

Ice HuntIce Hunt by James Rollins

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I had a lot of fun reading Ice Hunt. I didn’t notice the flaws that some people have reported; for example the football reference wasn’t a metaphor, it was a code.

There was considerable discussion regarding unethical research with human subjects in recent history.

There was romance. There was suffering. There was personal growth.

All the action took place in the Alaskan wilderness or the Norther polar ice cap.

I had a little constant deja vu during reading; I’m hoping my new system of recording what I’ve read and when will help me avoid that in the future.

The cover on first glance looks a bit silly, but in the context of the novel it makes sense.

ExcavationExcavation by James Rollins

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Great book.

Manages to work in Incas, aliens, and The Spanish Inquisition! And a couple romances to boot.

Only downside… I think I read it before, but don’t remember when. Didn’t remember actual scenes or action, but just had a sense of familiarity. I’m beginning to wonder if I’m becoming too familiar with page-turner structure.
